Chapter 14

“It’s about time you dropped by. My new and improved party starts in a little over twelve hours, and you and your aunt need to get things ready way before midnight.” While a tingling sensation of spent magic hung in the air, Addison stood in the middle of her now pristine, sparkling clean kitchen. “By the way, what were you doing skulking around my yard?”

Mud-smudged and more than a little rumpled, I keyed in on the residual magic, the exact type of leftover power that might hang around after turning a flower petal to ashes right before Bub’s and my eyes.

But, then again, she’d obviously cleaned the kitchen, no doubt with a heavy dose of magic assistance.

“We’ve been busy baking.” I tightened my grip on the tote from which the crystal ball protruded from the top because it didn’t quite fit. “As soon as my aunt said you were interested in hosting the party after all, I came right out.”

“Which surprises me, because I expected your arrest by now and that I would deal with your aunt rather than you.”

“Sorry to disappoint.” I waited for a wisecrack from my familiar, but he didn’t speak.

From the countertop, Bub regarded the young witch with his neck outstretched. Except for an occasional tail tip or whisker twitch, the cat barely moved, not even to blink.

When she noticed my glance toward the feline familiar, she blew out a loud breath. “He’s germ free, I would assume.”

“And for those witches who dare to assume,” Bub muttered.

At his verbal jab, which Addison seemed to not have heard, my smile grew genuine. “And shed-free as all familiars dealing with a bakery should be.” I tried to shake off the aftereffects of reading the most recent note, which remained tucked in the tote as well. “It would seem you’re giving us a short deadline to satisfy your catering contract, so I need to get an idea of what you need and get back to the bakery. After all, those goodies won’t bake on their own or deliver themselves.”

“First, I want you to get rid of the ghosts. They’ve invaded the backyard and are hovering around the house.”

“Oh, about that. Sebastian didn’t seem to realize that the cellar was haunted or that the deputies weren’t able to gain access to that one area of the house.”

“Sebastian! You brought him back after all? Where is he?” She snatched her purse from the counter. “If he’s at the bakery—”

“He and Lewanda Gail were planning on joining the ghosts here.”

With a smack of faux leather, she returned the purse to the countertop. “Don’t you think that’s something you should have already shared? I’m sure he’ll show himself sooner than later. You know, as a human, Sebastian wasn’t aware of a lot of things, especially the interactions between coven witches and wayward witches. He seemed to think I was like you and the rest.”

“Are you saying he underestimated you? If so, about what?”

“I’m saying that, for whatever reason, there’s a binding spell for the cellar that keeps the ghost in and anyone else out.
